Puppet View

We're all friends here at Puppet View!

does anyone know of a pattern for making giant lips (a lips-only puppet)?

making a couple puppets (an armoire and an armchair) and they both need giant lips.

need eyes, too...but there's a couple ideas about eyes already on this site, so will try those.

i'm working on converting an opera into a puppet show (not that that has any particular bearing on the style of lips or anything...just a cool tidbit of information about why i need the lips).

thanks in advance.

Hello Brian,

Yes of course, here is your lip patterns and instructions.
( please check the attachments to print out on your computer for your patterns )

Make A Simple Talking Lips Puppet

Next, using the lines we've drawn as a guide, darts are cut out of the upper and lower lips as seen above. This will enable us to fold the foam over and attach it to the mouth plate.
Step Four: Attaching the Lips to the Mouth Plate

These talking lips are an example of a very simple puppet that's very easy to make. To get started you'll need to download the free puppet pattern in .pdf format. Please note that in order to print it full size you'll need Legal size (8 1/2 x 14 inch) paper:
Materials Needed

* Two sheets of 2mm thick craft foam (or similar)
* One sheet of sticky-back felt
* One sheet of a still material such as cardboard, foam core or corregated plastic
* Scissors or other cutting tool
* Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Instructions
Step One: Cut Out The Pieces

The lips are cut from 2mm craft foam or a similar material, like 1 inch polyfoam. The mouth plate can be cut out of a stiff, sturdy material such as foamcore, cardboard or corrogated plastic and needs to be carefully scored down the middle so it can be folded in half easily. Also use the mouth plate pattern to cut out a piece of sticky-back felt, which will later be used to line the mouth.
Step Two: Altering the Lips

If you make the lips out of a thin material like craft foam some adjustments need to be made to the upper and lower lip pieces (if you're using a thicker material like 1 inch foam you can skip ahead to step four). Draw a straight line 1/2 inch above the bottom of the upper lip and 1/2 inch below the top of the bottom lip.
Step Three: Cutting Darts

Now the upper and lower lips are glued on to the mouthplate. For thin foam, the darts should be folded over and stuck to the mouth plate as seen above. For thicker foam the edge of the foam can be glued directly on to the mouth plate. Once the lips have been attached to the mouth plate the sticky backed felt should be applied to the mouth plate to line it and the tounge can be glued in to place as well.
Step Five: Add a Grip

A grip or handle is needed to help hold the puppeteer's hand in place while the puppet is being performed. The grip can be made by hot gluing a strip of craft foam or other material like strapping or pipecleaners to the top of the mouth plate.
All Done!

Wow!

Those are some big lips!!

Hey.. Flo, Do you think you could use the black light material for them?

That would be soooo cool!!
Make a bunch of them and have them sing for a performance at a school.
Here it would be all dark... the music starts... and you see the lip puppets singing.
Guess the hardest thing would try to get all the kids in sync.
But really a neat idea.

Thanks Flo for posting that!

Take Care,
Cher

Hey, Brian, Funny that you should request this just as I was thinking of making a giant lips puppet, based on the logo for SpeaktoMe. I'll try to attach it here, but I'm somewhat computer graphics challenged.
I saw that logo and couldn't resist the thought of making it into a puppet! :)
Thanks, Flo, for the pattern & directions, and I love the idea of the black light show, Cher - especially since I work at the New York State School for the Blind and I'm working on developing a puppet club with described shows. I'll keep that black light idea in my bag of tricks! :)
